We all have got past through, the dark patch in our lives. Usually we tend to forget it or harbor it deep within, to make our way forward. But do we ever get out of it ? Nope !! Our fears are manifested in our behaviors which we are oblivious off. The repression of the incident / event along with the emotion is permanently etched in our subconscious mind. Inadvertently our repressed emotion impacts our behaviour and we nurture our fear all life long. Getting extremely self conscious, nervous around stranger, fidgety in public, distrust, volatile, violent, depressed are some the behavior that we tend to develop and when it goes unattended, it takes a form of serious condition.

The impression of our dark past lasts till the time we don’t challenge it. The damage is not limited to behavior change but it influences the physiological and mental state as well. Distorted Personality is a bigger price to pay for our fears. Hence it is imperative to acknowledge our fears in the first place. However before we embark on the path of introspection, understanding the connect and how the brain works is pivotal. The famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud crystallized the concept with Iceberg Model, taking the functioning of the mind analogy to iceberg. It is Freud’s premise that within the human mind is contained in three levels of awareness or consciousness which are Conscious, Subconscious and Unconscious.

Conscious :- On the surface is conscious level that exists just below the surface of the water, which consists of those thoughts that are the focus of our attention now, and this is seen as the tip of the iceberg. Our thoughts, perception, memory and wishes which we are aware at any given point in time. This is the aspect of our mental processing that we can think and talk about in a rational way as when required. It is somewhat akin to short-term memory and is limited in terms of capacity so 10% of your mind operates at conscious level.

Subconscious :- Next level is the subconscious or preconscious level where all the memories are stored and can be brought to the conscious level when required. While we do not walk around consciously thinking about this information all the time, but we can quickly draw it out of your subconscious when asked to produce. For instance, if asked the model number for the first vehicle or you school teacher’s name you can produce it after some recollection. The subconscious mind often dabbles with conscious mind when needed.

Unconscious :- The bottom layer which is wide ranging is the unconscious level of our mind similar to bottom of the iceberg. It acts as a repository of our primitive thoughts and impulse kept at bay and mediated by the preconscious mind. The incidents, events and desires that are often too frightening or painful for people to acknowledge are locked away in the unconscious mind. This is usually done through repression. The ulterior motives , selfish needs, violent motives and urges , shameful experiences all the contents that are unacceptable or unpleasant are locked in the repository.

It is our unconscious mind which beholds our personality in the perspective it is formed. The intent and the endeavor is to bring the unconscious to the conscious level so that we are operating without fears. This is how we make peace with our past. The unconscious mind paves the personality and keeps interfering if not tended to.We all should strive to break-free from our past.Let’s embrace our new self the one which devoid of the scars. “I want to break Free” in the true sense.
